Artist's Statement: I am not very commercially oriented as much as I like selling my work. I’ve loved to draw and paint for as long as I can remember. Art was always my respite. My parents sent me to Saturday morning art classes when I was growing up. When I say I’m not very commercially oriented, I’m referring to when I was in art school. In art school, I was immediately drawn to the more philosophical/idea approach to art which was the “movement” at that time. And it has always predominantly stayed with me. In other words, a piece of artwork can be not so great on the technical rendering but if there’s wonderful (in my opinion) content or a captivating idea depicted, that’ll grab me every time.
On the other hand, regarding the formal elements of art, I love anything sensate—gooey, gunky paint and texture. I love expressionism—a loose free style in line and composition. In my own work, I most enjoy starting anywhere on the paper or canvas (i.e. no plan) and then the plan kind of evolves from there. I’m focusing more on playing with values and limiting my color palette in any individual piece.
When I go into my studio, I truly become myself. And the God of my understanding is very present.
